Gingerbread House Decorating at Tsunami with Julie Deffense

Guess what? December 12th is National Gingerbread House Day and we’re getting started early at Tsunami Sushi & Hibachi Grill. You didn’t know that a sushi and hibachi restaurant would be commemorating something fun like this, but we are.

Julie Deffense, the world-renowned baker, joins us on December 1st, December 4th, and December 5th for afternoon gingerbread house decorating. This is nothing less than a great opportunity to try some sushi or crazy shrimp, followed by decorating a festive gingerbread house.

What is National Gingerbread House Day?

For anyone who’s ever seen an elaborate gingerbread house, you probably don’t need too much explanation for why this is a fun commemoration. The gingerbread house is a derivative of the gingerbread man, which stems from a fairy tale that became popular in the 19th century. Baking gingerbread itself was popular at least as far back as the 17th century.

Decorated gingerbread was a popular gift idea particularly during the Christmas and Lent seasons. Parents would get them for their children, wedding guests would gift them to newlyweds too. Nowadays, people do all kinds of extravagant things with gingerbread.

Super-Sized Gingerbread Creations

In 2009, IKEA built the world’s largest gingerbread man in Oslo, Norway. He weighed an incredible 1,435 pounds. In 2013, someone in Bryan, Texas built the largest gingerbread house, which was the size of a tennis court and consisted of 35.8 million calories!

Those kinds of gingerbread houses probably do not lend themselves to consumption. You could eat the gingerbread house, but the ingredients tend to get stale after a few days. Besides, it would be heartbreaking to demolish it for sustenance. Some folks keep their gingerbread houses intact for an entire year!

Don’t Miss The Gingerbread Decorating Fun!

As we mentioned, we’re having the expert cake artist, Julie Deffense, show us how to make the most fantastic gingerbread houses. You won’t want to miss this. It will be a 2 ½ hour workshop where every patron gets to keep their own gingerbread house. We’re also serving appetizers as well as a cocktail courtesy of us.
