In honor of this event, we wanted to share a quick history of how this day came to be:

Sushi at Tsunami Sushi Sarasota

The dish we all love so much was developed in the Edo Period in Southeast Asia, between 1600 and 1800. That’s when residents began wrapping fish and vegetables in rice, and mixing it with vinegar.

Shortly after this, another variation became popular. This is where a slice of fish was draped over a mound of rice. This is the start of what has become the style of sushi that we are all familiar with today.

In 1923, a great earthquake displaced a number of people from Edo, Japan. It also brought a tremendous blow to what had been a strong Japanese economy prior. As residents were forced to relocate all over the world, they took their sushi recipes with them as well. This introduced it to people and places it would have never traveled to before.

It gained the attention of the middle class in the 1980s when it became trendy and popular among celebrities. In 2009, a user-led International Sushi Day began on Facebook, and since then has become a recognized holiday.

Sushi has become a delicacy and mainstream food item for many families and individuals in the West, especially in the last couple of decades. Come and celebrate its rising prominence in western cuisine with your friends at Tsunami Sushi & Hibachi Grill. We are easy to find, just head over to 100 Central Avenue, Suite 1022, in Sarasota.
